Carbohydrates are highlighted as one of the key parts of any healthy diet. Since your body needs a wide variety of foods to function properly and stay healthy, cutting back on crucial nutrients like carbs, isn’t really a good idea. Instead, one needs to know their carbs in order to incorporate them correctly in their diet.

Types of Carbohydrates

Carbs are divided into two groups: simple and complex. Complex carbohydrates make up the most of your carbohydrate intake, and they require much more time and work to be broken down.

“It’s a slower process. But that’s a good thing,” says Sandra Meyerowitz, MPH, RD, a nutritionist, online nutrition coach, and owner of Nutrition Works in Louisville, Ky.

Simple carbohydrates, on the other hand, are broken down more quickly, but “they don’t do much for your body,” Meyerowitz added.

Best Sources Of Carbohydrates

Most of the carbs you eat should be whole grains or other complex carbohydrates. As far as simple carbs are concerned, fresh fruits and vegetables are always a great choice. In order to get the balanced carbs intake, write down the following carbohydrate sources and try to stick to them:

  • whole grains (barley, bulgur, buckwheat, quinoa, oats)
  • whole-wheat and other whole-grain breads
  • brown rice
  • whole-wheat pasta
  • fruits and vegetables
  • beans, lentils, and dried peas
  • whole-grain cereals like 100 percent bran
