Sausage Chestnut Stuffing

December 29, 2015

With the holiday season come gifts, joy, and a lot of good food.

But before you gorge or the usual, no-so-healthy meals, try to change things up a bit this time by adding the sausage chestnut stuffing to the table!

This must-have holiday side takes about 40-50 minutes to prepare, and on top of that, it’s the light version of those fattening stuffing recipes you’re used to. Now, let’s get to it!

  • 2 cups of onions
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 10 cups of whole-wheat bread
  • 1 cup of celery
  • 1 cup of chestnuts
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 4 tablespoons of butter
  • ¼ cup of sage
  • 2 cups of broth
  • 1 cup of turkey sausage
  • ½ teaspoon of pepper

Step-By-Step Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 275°F (130°C). Spread the bread on a baking sheet and place in the oven for about 30 minutes.
  2. Increase the oven temperature to 350°F (180°C) and coat the baking dish with cooking spray.
  3. Place a large skillet over medium heat and heat the olive oil in it. Add celery, onions and chestnuts, then cook for 3-5 minutes. Once the mixture becomes golden, add garlic and sage and cook for another minute.
  4. Pour the mixture on top of the bread, then add butter to the hot pan and scrape off whatever’s left. Add sausage, pepper, and broth to taste and stir with the bread to combine thoroughly.
  5. Spread the mix onto the baking dish and leave in the over for about 30 minutes.
  6. Serve hot with your favorite main courses.

Happy New Year!
