Mediterranean Diet For Slower Aging

December 4, 2014

The Mediterranean diet is largely popular, due to the fact that it allows you to eat veggies, fruits, nuts, olive oil, and probably everyone’s favorite, a glass of wine with every meal.

Besides being regarded as one of the healthiest ways to eat, researchers have recently discovered that this diet could also help slow down the aging process.

Our DNA has certain sequences that are called telomeres. These form protective caps at the ends of chromosomes and get shorter every time a cell divides. By measuring their length, one can establish how old the cell is.

A research team at the Harvard Medical School had a long-term experiment that involved nearly 4,700 women.

Those who ate more Mediterranean foods and drank moderate amounts of wine with their meals had longer telomeres in their blood cells.

Health And Life

The study’s senior author, Immaculata De Vivo, said in a statement: “To our knowledge, this is the largest population-based study specifically addressing the association between Mediterranean diet adherence and telomere length in healthy, middle-aged women.”

“Our results further support the benefits of adherence to this diet to promote health and longevity.”

This new discovery might hopefully change the way we eat, in order to prolong our lives and make our meals healthier and more fun.
