Gluten-Free Diet Review

Results of scientific research shows that about 3 million Americans suffer from a serious medical condition called celiac disease. Good news is that eating gluten free is the best way to prevent further damage to the small intestine.  Also, gluten-free diet is advisable to everyone because of long-term positive effects on the health and to those suffering from headaches (migraines), infertility, insomnia, fatigue, etc.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is a protein which, when consumed, cause serious harm to people with gluten-related disorders. The best way to know if a product is gluten free is to read the ingredients. It is naturally found in certain grains such as wheat, barley, rye and some oats.

It is also essential ingredient of bagels, cakes, cereals, cookies, crackers, pasta, pizza and most of us unknowingly. Some people also avoid gluten due to a sensitivity to it while others make apersonal choice to avoid it.

Celiac disease

Also known as gluten intolerance, celiac disease is a genetic disorder that affects at least 1 in 133  Americans.

Symptoms of this dissorder can range from the classic features, such as diarrhea, weight loss, and malnutrition, to symptoms such as isolated nutrient deficiencies but no gastrointestinal symptoms.

It mostly affects European people (especially Northern European) , but recent studies show that it also noticeable in Hispanic, Black and Asian populations as well.

Those affected suffer damage  in the lamina propria and crypt regions of their intestines when they eat specific food-grain antigens (toxic amino acid sequences) that are found in wheat, rye, and barley.
