When we eat regularly, our digestive systems turn carbohydrates into the sugar glucose, which is, of course, our major source of energy.

Glucose is then extracted from the digestive tract and pumped into the blood stream which then provides all the cells in your body with this precious fuel.

Now, if you stop eating for a longer period of time, the glucose supply drops significantly in your blood, triggering your body to drain the needed energy from the stored glucose called glycogen.

However, when the glycogen is all used up, your body starts to burn fat in order to make its own glucose, as those cells need fuel one way or the other.

The Ketosis Mode

Now, if you fast for more than several days and your body goes a few days without eating, the ketosis mode starts to kick in. Ketosis mode basically means that you now burn fat as the primary source of fuel.
