How Safe Is Our Drinking Water Exactly?

July 24, 2015

Companies producing bottled water would like us all to believe that tap water is a far unhealthier choice than bottled water, but in reality this issue is a little more complex and deserves our attention.

One of the things to keep in mind is that bottled water is a far less environmentally friendly option than tap water simply because it leaves piles and piles of plastic behind that has to be recycled, provided that the user doesn’t leave the bottle behind to be decomposed.

Columbia University issued a statement saying, “Today Americans discard about 33.6 million tons of plastic each year, but only 6.5 percent of it is recycled and 7.7 percent is combusted in waste-to-energy facilities, which create electricity or heat from garbage.” The rest, well, is left for mother Earth to deal with.

To make matters worse, bottled water is often contaminated with chemicals from the plastic bottle itself, and in many cases it hardly differs from tap water.

On the other hand, tap water isn’t without its problems either as it is safe as far as the regulated chemicals go, but it also contains plenty of other elements that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency simply hasn’t created standards for yet and they are freely roaming the tap water.

So, what should you, as a health and environmentally conscious consumer do?

Finding good sources of healthy food is extremely important, but finding healthy water may be even more significant for our well-being.
We all know how important it is to drink water on a daily basis to keep our body hydrated and functioning the way it was meant to function. Yet, we are definitely all faced with a dilemma as far as the water source goes.

The answer might actually be somewhere in the middle, and it is filtered water. Filtered water means drinking tap water and removing the chemicals without having to deal with plastic from bottled water.

Our suggestion? Go for carbon block filters as they remove the most chemicals from tap water, are inexpensive in the long run, the water tastes great, the filter doesn’t require much maintenance, no electricity is needed for it to work, and the only thing you’ll need for it is a little more space in the kitchen.
