Do I Have Vitamin B12 Deficiency?

People don’t usually know that Vitamin B12 is vital for the production of blood cells and the proper maintenance of our nervous system.

Even though most of us get plenty of vitamin B12 on a daily basis, there are people who are experiencing its deficit, without even knowing it. This is why it is useful to learn the symptom of a vitamin B12 deficiency:

  • sore, red tongue
  • fatigue
  • loss of appetite
  • decreased sense of vibration
  • numbness or tingling in the hands and feet
  • weakness
  • anemia
  • poor memory and confusion
  • depression

Should you notice some of these symptoms, make sure do a blood test just in case.

In order to prevent not getting enough of this crucial vitamin, we recommend eating foods known to be high vitamin B12: liver, clams and other mollusks, beef, fish, fortified breakfast cereals, etc.

Who is at Risk?

It appears that elderly people, people suffering from Pernicious anemia and Crohn’s disease, but also vegetarians and vegans, are prone this deficiency.

Magazine Every Day Health says that “as we age, the lining of the stomach produces less intrinsic factor, which can greatly reduce the body’s absorption of vitamin B12. Those who follow a strict vegan diet with no animal products may also be at risk for developing a vitamin deficiency.”

    High levels of folic acid (common in vegetarians) can partially obscure the deficiency of B12 (which naturally occurs only in foods of animal origin). Some are surprised when diagnosed with pernicious anemia.

    On balance, younger readers should note that acne has recently been found to be more resistant to treatment with higher levels of B12. More is not always better.
