10 Diet Fads People Still Believe In

2. The Atkins Diet

The Atkins diet was developed by Dr. Robert Atkins in the 1970s, and it is a low-carb, high protein diet that promises fast results.

The idea behind the Atkins diet is to limit the carbohydrate intake and up the fiber intake, so that the body starts to burn fat instead of glucose for fuel.

The Atkins diet consists of four phases, and each phase encourages consumption of protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs, cheese, butter and oil, while only gradually increasing the carbohydrate intake from an almost complete ban in the beginning.

The users of the Atkins diet add foods rich in carbohydrates until they reach an optimal balance, losing weight as they go.

Most dietary experts agree that one of the biggest problems with the Atkins diet is that although it does sometimes lead to a quick and easy weight loss, most of the weight that is actually lost in the beginning is water.

Losing weight gradually, i.e., 1-2 pounds a week, is the healthiest and safest way to go and avoid the yo-yo effect, without falling for quick fixes, instant solutions or even scams.
